Idion of the Week

Okay, here’s our first idiom of the week. Or proverb, if you view it as thus. Originally, I was going to make posts like this the idiom of the week, but thought it made it too specific. Therefore, I’ve decided to call it the Wonder of the Week. Incredibly clever! Er, not really. But it sounds cute, yeah?

Anyway, let’s jump right in.

Everyone has probably heard the proverb: ‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.’

A vibrant green parrot perched on a human hand. The parrot has an orange ring around its eye, a yellow patch on its head and around the eye, and darker green feathers on its wings. Its beak is black and curved

‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.’

From what I’ve researched, it’s a simple phrase that essentially means that one shouldn’t take risks when you’ve got a sure thing already. I’m sure you’ve also heard the story about the dog, the bone, and the river reflection, yeah? A dog, with a bone in his mouth, sees his reflection in the river, and alas, he loses the bone he’s already obtained because he barks at what he believes is another dog with a second bone.

A brown Labrador Retriever is lying on green grass, chewing on a bone.

If you have one bird guaranteed in your hand, why risk it for potentially two birds you hear in the bush?

Makes sense, yeah?

That’s the Wonder of the Week. Have feedback? Another viewpoint? Let me know by commenting on the post!
